Introducing Kiddy Bilingo

As Glenn Doman once declared, babies are linguistic geniuses.  Not only can a baby pick up a new language faster than any adult can, he can easily acquire multiple languages from his home environment --- all at the same time, without getting confused, and without any effort. But do you know that there are sensitive periods associated with this natural language predisposition?  Experts agree that the optimal period is 0 to 3 years, followed by 3 to 6 or 7 years.  So, the earlier your child is exposed to a second or third language, the more spontaneously and efficiently he learns.

KiddyLearn is proud to present our bilingual programme, Kiddy Bilingo, aimed at helping little ones optimise the critical period of early childhood to learn more than 1 language. Why go bilingual, you may ask?  For the simple reason that bilingualism comes with many cognitive benefits.  For starters, the bilingual brain is wired very differently from a monolingual brain. Studies have observed that the bilingual person performs better in language awareness, problem-solving, multi-tasking, attention focus, working memory and mental flexibility. In other words, knowing more than 1 language is akin to investing in a better brain. In our modern global society, bilingualism also brings many social benefits, such as access to two cultures, openness to cultural diversity, ease of travel and more job opportunities.

Designed for the beginning learner, Kiddy Bilingo introduces young children to the dual languages of English and Chinese*,  using subject content that is meaningful to your little one. Your child will learn that an object has two different labels (e.g. ‘dog’ and ‘狗’ for  ), and in so doing, be able to flexibly switch between labels, as well as distinguish between forms and meaning. At the end of our course, your child will gain a sizeable mental vocabulary in both languages, which serves as a stepping stone to facilitate a full language literacy programme later.

Benefits Of Kiddy Bilingo

We have the know-how and tools; you get to reap the rewards. So, what are the benefits of Kiddy Bilingo for you and your child? Let us count the ways:

  • You, as a parent, can save up on much time and effort researching and preparing appropriate teaching materials in both languages. With Kiddy Bilingo, the process becomes easy, convenient and hassle-free.
  • You, as a parent, can lay your uncertainties to rest, knowing for sure that your kid is learning in an effective and structured way, right in keeping with established methodologies of early learning.
  • You, as a parent, will have more time and energy to concentrate on just teaching your little one,and bonding better with him.
  • Your child will gain an early head start in his grasp (particularly speech and comprehension) of both languages over his peers. This will translate to an easier and less stressful experience when he starts school .
  • Your child will see an increase in his or her vocabulary and general knowledge in both languages, which will in turn improve his or her everyday speech and overall understanding of what is spoken or written in the environment.
  • Your child’s brain structure will be significantly rewired through the learning of another language. He or she will develop a sharper and more flexible brain, one that is more proficient at linguistic awareness, working memory, attention focus, problem-solving, multi-tasking, task switching and conflict management.
  • Your child will invariably be more confident than his peers.

Kiddy Bilingo: Our Methodology

  1. Kiddy Bilingo is a 26-week-long ( about 6 months ) English-Chinese bilingual programme, with 130 content-rich lessons to engage your child in.

  2. We offer daily preplanned lessons 5 days in a week, with each lesson taking less than 5 minutes. Keeping every session short and sweet not only facilitates the learning of young children with limited attention span, it works out more conveniently for modern working parents with busy lifestyles. Furthermore, we have set aside 2 rest days per week to provide a breather from the programme, as well as an opportunity for parents and children to catch up on missed lessons.

  3. We feature English-Chinese word-pairs from a diverse range of subject content, grouped in more than 50 subject categories such as “my body -我的身体”, “wild animals -野生动物”, “clothes and accessories -衣服与配饰 ”, “actions -动作”, “fun time -欢乐时光” and “musical instruments - 乐器”, to name more than a few. Within each category is a carefully chosen list of 12 or 14 word-pairs commonly associated with the subject topic. However, your child will not see all the word-pairs from a single category at one go. A typical lesson for the day is a well-balanced mix of word-pairs, selected from 4 different categories.
  4. Every object/event in a subject category is presented with an illustrating picture and its English-Chinese word-pair, and repeated according to a pre-assigned schedule of retiring old bilingual words and introducing new ones. Your child would have seen each word-pair several times, before it gets rotated within a category and reappears again.
  5. In our structured curriculum, the English and Chinese components of Kiddy Bilingo slowly build up in terms of difficulty. For English, your child will be introduced to single words in the first half of the course, before progressing to more couplets (made up of 2 words) in the second half. For Chinese, the first half of the course will feature mostly one-character and two-character basic words, while the second half will see an increase in two-character, three-character and four-character words.
  6. Kiddy Bilingo incorporates a number of widely recognised principles of early learning from foremost experts in the field of early childhood education. According to Makoto Shichida, young children’s natural ability to learn multiple languages stem from 2 right-brain functions, namely the automatic processing function and mass memory function. Because the right brain is best activated with speed, we are offering two options for our bilingual programme --- a normal-speed mode and a fast-speed mode of 1 second or less --- for parents to select from.
  7. Though 1 lesson a day works out well for many children, we do recommend that you go through each lesson twice a day with your child for optimum results. However, be it once or twice a day, consistency is key because young children need daily language reinforcement. Do not forget, too, to pick a time when your kid is in a receptive mood. You will find that you may need to skip a day or two of lessons, when your child is cranky or ill. But worry not, as we have reserved 52 rest days in an academic term to provide for such contingencies that require catch-up lessons.
  8. No matter how well-designed our educational platform is, technology needs to be used interactively with an adult for the best results in children’s learning. A baby’s brain, as science tells us, is set to learn languages through social interactions, so who better to guide your child than you yourself --- as your child’s loving parent, and as his first and best teacher? When teaching occurs in the context of love and acceptance, learning will always be easy and effective.

A Comparison Of Kiddy Bilingo, Flashcards, And VCD/DVDs

At present, there are 3 main product types in the market that help expose young children to bilingualism, namely bilingual flashcards, bilingual VCD/DVDs and educational websites (here’s where Kiddy Bilingo falls into). Below is a comparative table of the three, for your information. Because variety is the spice of life, we at KiddyLearn believe that each product type has a role to play in enriching the learning experiences of your children; and for that matter, Kiddy Bilingo will make an invaluable add-on to your current teaching tools and resources.

Kiddy Bilingo: What Your Child Will Learn

With Kiddy Bilingo, your child is systematically exposed to bilingualism through the many English-Chinese word-pairs that he will learn in gradual levels of difficulty. Our incremental approach lets your child strengthen his linguistic skills at an unhurried pace, while increasing his confidence in using both languages.

As your kid soaks up more word-pairs like the proverbial sponge, you will find his vocabulary and general knowledge growing from strength to strength. As a consequence, so will his communication skills and comprehension abilities in both languages. Communication-wise, your child will have a powerhouse of new English and Chinese words to express his feelings and thoughts, to describe things and happenings, and to use in his everyday speech with others.  Do not be surprised if you observe your little one switching flexibly from one language to the other, depending on whom he is talking to. Comprehension-wise, he will also understand much more of what he hears in either language, whether from an adult, the television, computer or radio.

At the end of our course, your child will understand the conventional relationship between events/objects (e.g ) in the real world and their labels (e.g. ‘dog’ and ‘狗‘). He will be able to distinguish between forms and meaning. Furthermore, he will find it easier to learn the relations between words, that is, realise that the same object (e.g. ) can be both a dog and an animal. All of these relate to higher-order thinking skills, which you will find your child to be surely and steadily improving on.

What is a by-product of Kiddy Bilingo to you as a parent?  Well, you will be a happy witness to how your little darling is gradually growing into a bright and confident individual --- as you have always hoped for.
