Introducing Kiddy Read

As a parent, do you wish to impart a love of reading to your children? You may have paused to wonder how to begin teaching reading, when to start teaching, what to teach, and whether there are strategic steps to achieving your final objective of seeing your little one snuggle up with his favourite bedtime story to read by himself.

Well, fret no longer. Kiddy Read is created specifically to be your handy partner in guiding your young children, babies included, on the essentials of reading. At the click of a finger, you can easily access our online curriculum of daily preplanned lessons, depicted by thousands  --- well, tens of thousands to be exact -- of interesting pictures, animations and narrations.  Not only is your little one learning in an totally fun way, you can be assured that he is picking up the skill of reading in an effective and structured  manner ---  according to widely established principles set out by early learning experts, that is.

All it takes is only about 10 minutes per day (or 20 minutes, if you do 2 sessions per day) of your child’s attention and your dedicated time.  At the end of it, your child will do far more than recognise random individual words; he will learn to read, with growing confidence, short phrases, long sentences, and eventually an entire story.

Benefits Of Kiddy Read

We have the know-how and tools; you get to reap the rewards. So, what are the benefits of Kiddy Read for you and your child? Let us count the ways:

  • You, as a parent, can save up on much time and effort researching on early reading, and preparing appropriate teaching materials. With Kiddy Read, the process becomes easy, convenient and hassle-free.
  • You, as a parent, can lay your uncertainties to rest, knowing for sure that your kid is learning in an effective and structured way, right in keeping with established methodologies of early reading.
  • You, as a parent, will have more time and energy to concentrate on just teaching your little one,and bonding better with him.
  • Your child will gain an early head start in reading over his peers. This will translate to an easier and less stressful experience when he starts school .
  • Your child will see an increase in his or her vocabulary and general knowledge, which will in turn, improve his or her everyday speech and overall understanding of what is spoken or written in the environment.
  • Your child will be able to activate his right brain, which is responsible for many genius capabilities such as photographic memory, speed processing, abstract thinking, creativity, perfect pitch, instant processing of large chunks of information, etc.
  • Your child will learn to read books, and more importantly, be able to use his reading ability to explore and acquire further knowledge.
  • Your child will invariably be more confident than his peers.

Kiddy Read: Our Methodology

  1. Kiddy Read is a 14-month-long English reading programme, spread over 4 academic terms of 14 weeks each.In each term, there are 84 content-rich lessons to engage your child in, amounting to a total of 336 lessons by the end of our comprehensive curriculum.
  2. We offer daily preplanned lessons 6 days in a week, with each lesson taking about 2 - 10 minutes*. Keeping every reading session short and sweet not only facilitates the learning of young children with limited attention span, it works out more conveniently for modern working parents with busy lifestyles. Furthermore, we have set aside one rest day per week to provide a breather from the programme, as well as an opportunity for parents and children to catch up on missed lessons.
*2-10 minutes is based on one lesson mode. Playing two or more lesson modes will take up more time.
  3. Kiddy Read incorporates a number of widely recognised principles of early reading from foremost experts in the field of early childhood education. We have distilled the best and most effective practices from different schools of thought on early learning into a variety of lesson modes that you and your child can choose from, depending on your specific needs:
    • Picture Mode: for more details, click here.
    • Word Mode: for more details, click here
    • Word-Picture Mode: for more details, click here
    • Multisensory Mode: for more details, click here
    • Quickflash Mode: for more details, click here

A reading session typically involves  one lesson mode,  but could combine several  of the above modes, if you so desire.

  4. We feature words from a diverse range of subject matter, grouped in more than 100 subject categories such as “my body”, “domestic animals”, “clothes and accessories”, “actions”, “fun time” and “musical instruments”, to name more than a few. Within each category is a carefully chosen list of 12 or 14 words commonly associated with the subject topic. However, your child will not see all the words from a single category at one go. A typical lesson for the day is a well-balanced mix of words, selected from 3 different categories.
  5. Every word in a subject category is originally presented in lower letter casing, and repeated according to a pre-assigned schedule of retiring old words and introducing new ones. Your child would have seen each word several times before it gets rotated within a category. Some of these words will appear yet again, when they tie up with other words to form couplets, phrases and later sentences.
  6. Your child will be introduced systematically to single words in the first term, couplets in the second term, phrases in the third term, sentences and finally stories in the fourth term. Here’s an illustration of our graduated approach to reading: “skirt”(single word)>“pink skirt” (couplet) >“a pink skirt” (phrase) > “I have a pink skirt” (sentence).
  7. Kiddy Read comes with a revision segment starting from the fifth week of the first term. This revision schedule allows for every word, couplet, phrase, and sentence previously taught in lower-case letters to be revised again, but in a different way. Children will now be exposed to the same word, couplet, phrase or sentence in titular-case and upper-case script. For example, the single word ‘apple’ will resurface as ‘Apple’ and ‘APPLE.’As we all know, young children learn very fast, and get easily bored when the same information is presented too many times. By introducing new permutations of old sight words, we make revision more meaningful and refreshing for children, while consolidating their inventory of recognisable sight words.
  8. In the fourth academic term, your child will make the progressive leap from reading complete sentences to reading complete stories. For this purpose, we have especially developed 12 short stories, using certain words, couplets, phrases and sentences that your child would already be well acquainted with. Unlike conventional stories, each sentence from the text of our stories will precede, rather than appear alongside, the relevant animated illustration. This is to encourage children to focus on reading the text first, as opposed to being distracted by the colourful images.
  9. Though 1 reading session a day works out well for many children, we do recommend that you go through each lesson twice a day with your child for optimum results. However, be it once or twice a day, always bear in mind to pick a time when your kid is in a receptive mood. You will find that you may need to skip a day or two of lessons, when your child is cranky or ill. But worry not, as we have reserved 14 rest days in an academic term to provide for such contingencies that require catch-up lessons.

A Comparison Of Kiddy Read, Flashcards, And VCD/DVDs

At present, there are three product types in the market that help to teach young children to read, namely flashcards, VCD/DVDs and educational websites (here’s where Kiddy Read falls into). Below is a comparative table of the three, for your information. Because variety is the spice of life, we at KiddyLearn believe that each product type has a role to play in enriching the learning experiences of your children; and for that matter, Kiddy Read will make an invaluable add-on to your current teaching tools and resources.

Kiddy Read: What Your Child Will Learn

With Kiddy Read, your child will learn in a structured way, from reading words, to couplets, to phrases, to sentences, and finally to stories. Our incremental approach allows your child to strengthen his reading skills gradually, and increases his confidence as an independent reader. At the end of the course, your little one would have little qualms picking off a storybook from the bookshelf to read on his very own.

As your kid picks up more words with Kiddy Read, you will find his vocabulary and general knowledge growing from strength to strength.  As a consequence, so will his communication skills and comprehension abilities. Communication-wise, your kid will have an arsenal of new words to express his feelings and thoughts, to describe things and happenings, and to use in his everyday speech with others.  Comprehension-wise, he will understand much more of what he reads, whether from books, posters or billboards, and much more of what he hears , whether from the television, computer or radio.

So, what is a  by-product of all this? You will be a happy witness to how your little darling is gradually growing into a bright and confident individual --- as you have always hoped.
